Dear Kindergarten Families,
One of our regular English Language Arts activities in our classroom is Phonics. During Phonics we meet as a class on the rug and do a whole list of activities together. We practice blending sounds we hear into words and segmenting words into sounds. We practice saying the sounds that letters make and writing the letters of sounds that we hear. We focus on a new letter with each lesson and practice writing and making the letter sound. Then we practice reading and writing words with that new letter in it. We have been learning to read words by pointing to letters, saying the sounds they make, and then blending them together to say the whole word. See some photos below of students participating in Phonics and photos of our Consonant Wall and Vowel Valley that show which letters we've focused on so far. These would be good letters to practice blending into words at home for extra practice!
We are looking forward to our Fall Party today from 2:00-3:00 and thank you to parents who have signed up to help out! We are looking forward to Thurston's Halloween Parade on Tuesday from 12:10-12:40 and I would love a few helpers to help us get ready beforehand! You can click HERE to sign up to help out with this or other volunteer jobs that have been added. Please note that Tuesday, 10/31, is an early release day with the school day ending at 1:00. We are looking forward to our first field trip on Thursday 11/2, from 9:45-12:05, to Plymouth Orchards and thank you families who have signed up to help out with this as well!
When you have a chance, please check out the HOMEWORK page on our website for ideas of learning activities for your child when they are traveling or home sick (but feeling well enough to do some school work!) These are optional activities for families who are interested in them!
Thank you to Nora's Mom for reading aloud to our class!
