Dear Kindergarten Families,
One of our daily activities in Kindergarten is to work on phonemic awareness. From our Heggerty curriculum, "Phonemic awareness is the understanding that spoken words are made up of individual sounds, which are called phonemes." During this class meeting time, which we call LISTENING GAMES in our classroom, we use our voices and gestures, to work on different skills. Lately, we've been working on identifying rhyming words, naming the beginning sound and ending sounds in words, blending syllables into words and segmenting words into syllables, adding or deleting or changing syllables from words to make new words, naming letters and their sounds, and counting the words we hear in sentences. You might try to ask your child to play some listening games with you at home by letting them teach you one of these skills!
Parent-Teacher Conferences are beginning next week! Please check HERE to double-check your date and time (or sign up if you haven't yet!) For those meeting me on Zoom, I'll share the link when it gets closer. I look forward to connecting with you!
Thank you to parents who have signed up to volunteer in different ways to support our class! We are all set with volunteers for our field trip and our class Fall party! There are now more volunteer spots available for read-alouds and a few extra jobs for parents who would like to help with projects from home. You can sign up HERE to help out!
Kindergarten classes at Thurston will soon be adding handwriting to our list of learning activities. We will be using handwriting workbooks with language that aligns to that of Handwriting Without Tears but that is adapted to our student needs.
The Thurston Book Fair is happening next week! Our class is signed up to preview the book fair on Wednesday morning (10/18) and to go shopping for books on Thursday morning (10/19.) See the Heron Hello for more information about the book fair!
Just a reminder that there is no school from Friday 10/13 through Monday 10/16 for Fall Break!
